Although many users still refer to the files created by QuarkXPress as documents, in fact QuarkXPress creates projects rather than documents. Projects are containers for layouts, each with its own page size, margin and column guides, master pages and medium (print or web). Realising that some users may not wish to use this multi-layout capability, Quark introduced, in version 7, the ability to deactivate it and to work in single layout mode.

Multi layout mode

Multi layout mode is the default mode within QuarkXPress. In this mode, each new project contains a single layout with the attributes chosen/entered in the New Project window. Other layouts can be created by selecting New layout from the Layout menu. The navigation tabs in the bottom left of the document window can then be used to switch between layouts.

The following movie shows a project containing two layouts called "Comp slips" and "Business cards" and the creation of a third layout called "Letterhead".
